I attempt to describe a novel approach, the "ETH approach", towards understanding how, according to standard quantum mechanics, events, a concept emphasized by the late Rudolf Haag, and "classical facts" may appear in open physical systems. My goal is to present a rational account of basic quantum mechanics and to clarify its "ontology".
